Portland Community College broke ground on a new training center in Scappoose on Wednesday.
It is the school's first permanent training center in Columbia County and will be part of the Oregon Manufacturing Innovation Center.
The program will focus on welding, machinery and mechatronics.
College officials say the new center will prepare the next generation of skilled workers, something desperately needed in our economy today.
The program will be based on an apprenticeship model to help students develop skills needed in their industry.
The center is set to open early next year.
